A note from the Spirit of Tony Jasinski (as approved by the SFGBA board):
Get your new year started right! Come back and play Sunday basketball, as
we are working to invigorate a new atmosphere on Sundays!

You can work off some of those extra holiday pounds, and have fun, too.

SUNDAY TIPS:

* WHITE/DARK JERSEY: Have BOTH a white and a dark tee-shirt or jersey for flexible team assignments…

* COMPETITIVE: Come a little later (6pm?) if you are seeking stronger competition…

* RECREATIONAL: Try to get their earlier (5pm) if you are not a more athletic player.

* COMMUNITY: No attitude Sundays…. If someone acts like a jerk, don’t escalate it. You’re there to have fun, not for a debate.

* COORDINATORS ARE VOLUNTEERS- THEY ARE NOT PAID: Respect the volunteer coordinators. They are doing their best to make playing time and teams as fair as possible. (Also, please remember these are VOLUNTEERS, so appreciate them!)

* FIVE BUCKS: Don’t forget to have your $5 ready. (We lose money on Sundays, but open court play is important to a lot of us.)

* BE FLEXIBLE – WE’RE NOT AGAINST YOU: You may be asked to play with less desirable teammates or sit out a game. Please understand that the teams are constructed on the fly, with the intention to provide as much balance as possible – we’re not out to get anyone. And sitting out a game is to be expected when there are higher numbers of players.

We are working to reduce the occurrences of nasty behavior that have sometimes happened. If someone does act inappropriately, they may be banned—especially for repeated behaviors. Please help the coordinators on Sunday control these issues.

See you on the basketball court!

Congratulations to Frank castaldini and his City Swishers and Mikey Survillion’s Guards ‘R’ Us for winning the CBL Championships last night.

City Swishers squeeze out win over Nads: The City Swishers got off to a quick start. Nads, led by Scott Furr, found themselves playing catch up the entire game. Nads finally took a one-point lead late in the game until Kristen Griffith hit a baseline floater with 3.6 seconds remaining to give the Swishers a one point lead. Furr’s midcourt heave at the buzzer bounced off the front rim to give the Swishers the one-point win and the “B” Championship.

The Mikes too much for Hannibal Sexters: In the “A” league finals, Guards ‘R’ Us got off to a similarly quick start. The Hannibal Texters struggled offensvively before finding some flow to tie the game at halftime, 18-18. The second-half was all Mikes – Survillion, O’Connor, and Tseng. The trio grabbed rebounds, blocked, stole, and hit the floor running. “Guards” ended up winning the game by a healthy margin.

Thank you/Post Season Party this Saturday @ Rebel: Thank you all for your participation in the fall season of the Castro Basketball Season. Please help us celebrate the season at the CBL post season holiday patty at Rebel this Saturday.

Come down to 1760 Market (@ Valencia St.) from 6pm-9pm for the individual awards announcements and share free beers from MillerCoors and free wings, sliders, and fries from Sneaky’s BBQ.

SFGBA Referee and Player Expectations

The SFGBA’s goal to promote, through the game of basketball, a gay friendly environment that promotes the following set of principles: Industriousness, Friendship, Loyalty, Cooperation, Enthusiasm, Self-Control, Alertness, Initiative, Intentness, Condition, Skill, Team Spirit, Poise, Confidence, and Competitive Greatness. It is the intention of the organization to promote these qualities and to be sure that ours is a safe and enjoyable environment in which to play basketball.

Our referees are very important in assisting to promote the goals of the SFGBA during our league play. Following are what our players can expect from our referees and a few guidelines what our referees are entitled to and should expect from our players:

Players should expect Referees to:

Maintain a friendly but professional relationship with the players, captains and organizers of the league.

Exercise their ultimate responsibility of maintaining control of the game.

Officiate properly and to exercise the responsibility of calling the game fairly with no bias.

Provide the courtesy of listening to a player or captain who questions a call or decision. Referees are expected to provide a reasonable and respectful response when they are questioned.

Show respect for all players, captains, and organizers and to promote the integrity of the game.

Officiate all games on the same day at the same level of care and quality.
